Are you invisible at work?

Sarah Setterfield is an expert in personal branding, and founder of Impact for Success, a professional development consultancy. Here she outlines her advice on how to stand out in the workplace.

Would you buy a television which only shows programmes in black and white - probably not?  So why do so many people wear the clothing equivalent to work?

The brain likes colour and pays more attention to it.  Wearing business camouflage (black, blue, grey, white) renders you almost invisible as you merge into the crowd.

Thinking about what your working day looks like and whether you need to impress, influence or be approachable you can use the psychology of colour to support your professional image.

Your basics

Black, navy and charcoal are great colours for the foundation of your wardrobe: suits, jackets, skirts.  Buy the best quality you can and they will see you through many years.

Enhancing your professional image

Men – instead of putting on a white or blue shirt, teamed with a mostly blue tie, think about putting some colour on instead.  Look at the websites of shirt manufacturers and take inspiration from there.

Women – break free from that mostly black wardrobe and invest in a couple of colourful jackets, some brighter tops or use a scarf to add colour to your outfit.

Did you know that 60% of career progression is down to visibility and exposure?  Make yourself visible!
