Back story: Danny Corrigan

Danny Corrigan, Chief Executive Officer, CME European Trade Repository Ltd, talks about some of the highlights of his career - and offers advice to anyone keen to get ahead in the City

His greatest professional love is......the Russian financial markets. It started with a phone call he received in the mid-1990s with a former colleague, who explained that these markets afford interesting opportunities. A plane ride and an interview later, Danny and his family moved to Moscow, where he spent the next two years working as Head of Treasury Markets at MFK Renaissance Capital Ltd.

"The Russian markets started in the mid-1990s, creating a 20-year concertina of the developments that occurred in other markets over several hundred years," he says.

One of his career highlights was......being seconded to the London Clearing House to manage the unwinding of the Lehman Brothers repo portfolio after its default in 2008.

But like many working in financial markets, Danny oscillates between the safe and the risky. In 1999, he took a step back from risk, returning to London to work as a consultant for the London Clearing House (LCH).

"I worked with a young, fresh-faced Dan McGuire, then a risk employee at LCH, now Global Head of Swapclear," he recalls. "It was a tremendous experience working with true professionals to take risk out of the market."

Danny, who also spent time working in the repo market in Sydney, eventually returned to Moscow for a further two years, as Director at ING Eurasia, before heading back to London to run an OTC Derivatives desk at ICAP.

One of the best teams he's worked with is......his team at CEM European Trade Repository, where he currently works as Chief Executive Officer. In his latest role, Danny works in a closely regulated, strategically important role, central to the functioning of the derivatives market.

It may not present the same risks as some of his previous roles, but it is an exciting place to be. "The infrastructure didn't exist, in this form, before the financial crisis," says Danny. "It has allowed me to work with a peerless team of people."

The best way to launch a career in the City is to......study for a professional qualification, "get up early" and be prepared to work Sunday afternoons if need be, advises Danny, who despite a busy work schedule, has still found the time to write five books and manage youth football teams alongside his career.
