Reaching for the sky is a wish come true for stalwart CISI member

Having been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, retired stockbroker Peter Knowles FCSI fulfilled a lifelong dream of taking a flight in a Spitfire – with the aim of raising £25,000 for charity

Peter, one of the Institute’s original members following its formation in 1992, has so far collected more than £13,000 in sponsorship for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal and is calling on CISI members to dig deep to help him reach, or even exceed, his charity goal.

“The cancer diagnosis came out of the blue and was a complete shock but I decided I just had to get on with it,” he said.

“The flight was absolutely fantastic"

Peter, who lives in Leeds, has been a patient at Yorkshire Cancer Centre, based in his home city, since March 2014.

Peter said: “The flight was absolutely fantastic – I even got the chance to take the controls for a couple of minutes on two occasions. We were airborne for 50 minutes and got up to a speed of 380mph.”

Elected a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1982 while working for Smith Keen Cutler in the City, Peter moved to Leeds in 1995 to work as Group Director at Fyshe Horton Finney. Subsequently he was Chair of Park Square Stockbrokers between 2009 and 2012.

He served as a Trustee on the board of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation for 14 years.

The flight, in what is one of only five remaining airworthy Spitfires in the world, took place between Goodwood Aerodrome in Sussex and the Isle of Wight.
