With the EU referendum decided, what happens now?

By Lora Benson | Jul 07, 2016
There is no doubt that the result of the EU referendum has meant that as a nation we are facing new challenges, and understandably, a great deal of uncertainty over what the future might hold. The unprecedented series of political upheavals that we are also bearing witness to continues to fill the headlines on a minute by minute basis. Despite the continual political manoeuvring and frantic media coverage, our view is that in time we will see a period of calm pervade.

The noise will start to dissipate, cooler heads will prevail and start to work out what the next steps are politically and financially, and then they’ll begin to examine how to manage the withdrawal from the EU.

As has already been reported, it will be the initiation of Article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union that would begin the legal process of the UK’s exit from the EU, a process which can take up to two years. This means that we will have a good deal of time to understand what the implications are for businesses and individuals, and dispel some of the rhetoric.

Even so, it is understandable that the current period of flux in the stock markets will inevitably lead to questions being raised by retirees. In this House View, we therefore explain our thoughts on what the future could hold during these uncertain times.
