Isle of Man CISI members receive Thomson Reuters Lipper Mutual Funds Flow Update

The Isle of Man Branch of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) hosted Jake Moeller, Chartered MCSI and Head of UK & Ireland Research, from Thomson Reuters Lipper on 23rd February to provide a presentation to its members on the topic of “What can we learn from the mutual funds flow of 2015?”

Thomson Reuters Lipper is a global leader in supplying mutual fund information, analytical tools, and commentary. Lipper's benchmarking and classifications are widely recognized as the industry standard by asset managers, fund companies and financial intermediaries. Its reliable fund data, fund awards designations and ratings information provide valued insight to advisors, media and individual investors.

Within a detailed presentation, Jake explained that data from Lipper evidenced that money market funds received the largest inflow by asset type in 2015 across global fund sales.  This was closely followed by equity funds, then bond and alternatives.  Sales by region demonstrated that the largest inflows came from Europe, Asia Pacific and North America, with South America being at the opposite end the spectrum. Total Assets Under Management within Funds in Europe increased to €8,884.15 billion by the end of 2015, a further uptick from the most recent low of 2011 and the majority of sales within Europe were to actively managed funds as opposed to ETF’s and Index trackers.  It was interesting to note that when reviewing flow by sector, the most favoured sector was Equity Europe, whereas Equity US was one of the worst performing sectors in terms of sales.

Commenting, Jonathan Leece, CISI Isle of Man Branch President said “We are delighted to have been able to provide this helpful industry update to our  members and are thankful to Thomson Reuters Lipper for sharing their high level findings with us in such a timely way so very soon after the 2015 year-end. The outcomes were interesting to note, many of which were not surprising given market movements during 2015, but some other interesting developments.”
