The Fastest Way to Get There

We convince ourselves in each moment that we can’t afford to take long-term decisions. After all, we’re on a mission to get ‘there’ quick.

Tips From The Coalface, February 2019

Once we get ‘there’ all will be well. People will respect us for what we’ve done, and we’ll be independently wealthy too, with the freedom of choice that will give us.

Over a lifetime of trying to get ‘there’ fast, I’ve learned one thing. The fastest way to get ‘there’ is to go slow. Do it right and do it once.

We convince ourselves in each moment that we can’t afford to take long-term decisions. After all, we’re on a mission to get ‘there’ quick.

Yet when I look back on my business career, I realise that all those short-term decisions came with long-term consequences. They rarely delivered what I hoped they would.

It was only when I turned 50, and reflected on all of this, that I made the decision to never take short-term decisions again. It was excruciating to do, because the voice in my head said yet again, “but you won’t get ‘there’ fast if you do this.”

I just told myself that everything up to age 50 was the apprenticeship. From here I could move forward making great long-term decisions. And it’s made all the difference. Things are better than they’ve ever been.

You don’t need to wait until you turn 50 to make a similar decision for yourself. And if you’re already older than 50 the same principle still applies. Make long-term decisions every time.

It’s the fastest way to get ‘there’.
