A Message For Leaders

By Lora Benson | May 13, 2019
When most people think of leaders, they’re thinking of the charismatic version. Someone who makes powerful speeches, develops grand plans, or has the powers of a superhero; think Winston Churchill, General George Patton, or Wonder Woman.

It’s an impossible benchmark for most of us to contemplate living up to.

But what if your goal wasn’t to lead, but to support the people that work for you?

Verne Harnish, author of Scaling Up, provides this tip for all managers; “De-hassle, don’t de-motivate”.

Speeches, orders, and decrees from on-high are almost always de-motivating managerial rubbish. You might have been on the receiving end of these yourself during your career.

Where are your team stuck, impeded, or held back in their ability to do their jobs?

Help them remove those blockages and impediments.

I’ve heard it referred to as the servant-leadership model, but forget the name, just focus on the action.

What does de-hassling look like for your team?

  • Are the team missing a skillset?
  • Do they require more training and support in using existing technology better?
  • Are they short-handed or under-resourced?

If you want a team that supports you and frees you up to be your best, then focus on supporting them in the first instance.

It changes everything.
